FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
David Movsesyan reflects on the memories behind his work—and his hopes of bringing Armenian photography to a wider audience.
Golden Roots Heritage Foundation has released a documentary featuring Armenian photographer David Movsesyan, exploring how personal experience, cultural identity and community memory shape his art.
Available to watch on YouTube, the film introduces an artist whose relationship with photography began at seven. Through an intimate interview, David describes how creating images became central to his life, helping him express emotions and experiences that can be difficult to communicate in words.
His photography combines composition, symbolism and transformation. In his Mandragoras work, the mandrake root becomes a means of exploring human behaviour. Across his images, difficult emotions sit alongside the possibility of hope.
The documentary also explores David’s connection to his Armenian heritage while living abroad. His Armenian Genocide memorial project in Crete brought photography together with memories from the local Armenian community, drawing on stories passed down through parents and grandparents. These experiences raise questions about belonging, loss and what future generations should remember.
By sharing David’s story, Golden Roots highlights the role of contemporary artists in keeping cultural heritage alive. The project reflects the Foundation’s aims of sharing Armenian culture in Armenia and internationally, strengthening connections with diaspora communities and cultural institutions, and supporting educational and professional development.
David’s ambition is to bring Armenian art and photography to wider international audiences. He is seeking grant support from Golden Roots to help develop his career and access opportunities to present his work, participate in exhibitions and build relationships with curators and cultural organisations. Any future award would be subject to the Foundation’s assessment and approval.
The film invites viewers, journalists and cultural organisations to discover the person behind the photographs and consider how Armenian stories can reach new audiences through contemporary art.
